Case Study Updates Posted to Homegrown Tools

Ten case studies featured on the Homegrown Tools site have new updates posted. From these updates readers will learn how economic development strategies implemented ten years ago have played out, whether the town is still pursuing the original strategy or if they have shifted, or added to, their original approach.
In Edenton, NC we learn that the town’s historic preservation efforts have been successful, with the redevelopment of a historic cotton mill into a residential units propelling further investments in historic preservation. Additionally the town has invested in marketing itself as a tourism and retirement destination, while also investing in developing its waterfront assets.
In Houston, MN we learn about how investment in rural broadband has allowed growth in the number of students served by the local public school district through online courses, as well as enhanced curricula. Through their virtual academy, the district is able to serve non-resident students with specialized courses. Ultimately this has allowed Houston to retain an independent school district without increasing costs to local tax payers.
In Dillsboro, NC we learn that local leaders have shifted the focus of the Jackson County Green Energy Park. Originally conceived as an incubator for artists, the facility has shifted away from hosting individual artists, finding more success in partnering with Western Carolina University to provide space for classes. Additionally, the town experienced an unexpected shock when the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, a popular tourist attraction, shifted its departure point out of Dillsboro. This has prompted local leaders to re-evaluate how they can activate their downtown and attract visitors.
